Skin Care Tips

Skincare involves a range of practices that help enhance skin appearance, improve skin integrity, and prevent the occurrence of various skin disorders. Proper skincare coupled with healthy lifestyle choices can delay natural aging and help maintain skin health. Here are some basic skincare tips:

Practice a gentle skin cleansing routine

Skin Care Tips

Gentle skincare practices include:

  • Limit bath time: Hot water baths or long hot showers should be avoided as these can strip your skin of its natural oils.
  • Avoid strong soaps: Use mild cleansers to wash your skin as strong soaps may irritate your skin and wash off the natural oils.
  • Shave carefully: A shaving lotion or cream should be used to protect your skin and provide lubrication while shaving.
  • Avoid harsh rubbing: Use a dry towel to gently pat and dry your body after a bath or washing your skin so that some moisture remains on the skin.
  • Apply moisturizer: In case of dry skin, use a moisturizer suitable for your skin type containing SPF (sun protection factor).

Protect yourself from the sun

Direct exposure to sunlight can, over time, result in wrinkles, spots, and other skin problems, as well as increase the chance of developing skin cancer.

  • Use sunscreen: Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, reapplying the sunscreen every two hours, or more often if swimming or perspiring, while going out in the sun.
  • Seek the shade: Avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 10 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon.
  • Wear protective clothing: Use clothing that covers most of your skin to protect it from the sun.

Don't smoke

Regular smoking can damage your skin and contribute to the formation of wrinkles and other spots. Smoking can cause the blood vessels to contract and reduce the flow of blood making the skin look paler, and it also depletes the nutrient supply to the skin that is necessary to maintain skin health. Also, smoking increases the chances of developing skin cancer and other related disorders. If you are a regular smoker, consult with your doctor to help you quit smoking.

Eat a healthy diet

A daily healthy diet is an irreplaceable skincare practice. Your skin requires various nutrients which are generally obtained from the food you eat, and hence a proper diet is necessary to keep your skin nourished and healthy. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins are generally considered good for the skin. Some studies also promote the consumption of fish oil and avoiding refined carbohydrates for improving skin health. Drinking plenty of water can also help in keeping your skin hydrated and healthy.

Manage stress

Acne and other skin problems tend to break out when you are under a lot of stress. Proper stress management is a prerequisite to maintain healthy skin. So, proper sleep and stress management are important parts of skincare. You should always consult your doctor in case you find it difficult to manage stress.
