What is Laser Surgery?
Laser surgery uses laser beams, high-intensity light of a specific wavelength that can be focused into a narrow beam, to treat or correct various conditions and abnormalities. They allow surgeons to work very precisely as the beam of light can be focused onto a specific point, causing less damage to surrounding tissues. Laser surgery is performed to treat obstetrics and gynecological conditions such as cancers of the cervix, vagina, and vulva, genital warts, polycystic ovaries, endometriosis, heavy menstrual bleeding and manage complications that could occur in multiple pregnancies. It is also used as a cosmetic tool to counteract the effects of gynecological aging, characterized by vaginal elasticity, lack of lubrication, vascularity, hydration, and thinning of the vaginal mucosa.
Laser surgeries may be performed under local anesthesia. The laser beam is either directed on the skin or through an endoscope, a camera and light-fitted tube that is inserted into your body through a natural opening such as the vagina, to slowly destroy or vaporize the abnormal tissue. During the procedure, you may experience slight discomfort or sensation of heat.
Laser surgery results in quicker healing and less downtime than traditional surgery.
